Using it safely

  • Start with weights of about 5% of your child's body weight and never go above 10%.
  • Keep wear to about 20 minutes at a time, then give a break; it is not for all-day wear.
  • Your child must be able to take the vest off, or tell you they want it off; never use it to restrain or punish.
  • Never let your child sleep in a weighted vest.
  • Take it off straight away if your child has trouble breathing, feels sick, gets too hot or seems upset.
  • Ask a doctor or occupational therapist before use if your child has any breathing, heart or circulation concerns.

Based on published guidance from makers of similar products, occupational therapy services and product-safety regulators. General guidance, not an assessment of your child. Talk to a practitioner
